Abstract
Ever more initiatives, public and private, are introduced to regulate labour standards in global supply chains, but to what effect? In the inaugural Ciampi Lecture of 2026 Prof. Sarosh Kuruvill, of Cornell University, will assess a quarter century of effort at trying to enforce core labour standards in supply chains, beginning with the anti-globalization protests and ending with the Mandatory Due diligence legislation in Europe. The lecture will canvas developments, present some of Prof. Kuruvilla’s research across the world and especially in Asia, and talk about some hot issues today such as gender-based violence and climate change. An underlying concern will echo Tancredi in Il Gattopardo, “For things to remain the same, everything must change.” The special lecture will be chaired by Prof. Guglielmo Meardi, Dean of the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences of Scuola Normale Superiore.
